French authorities begin clearing Paris migrant tent camp

On Friday French authorities started clearing a migrant tent camp on the streets of Paris, local broadcaster BFMTV said.

The camp, situated north of the city centre near the Stalingrad metro station, is believed to be home to up to 3,000 migrants. Authorities promised to clear the camp this week and move inhabitants to other accommodation.

The city of Paris said it wants to open a migrant reception centre in order to prevent future makeshift camps from forming. Last week French authorities cleared a camp in Calais, known as the "Jungle," which had been home to around 5,000 migrants.    (dpa)
